Climate Ready Great Lakes consists of three modules designed to help create a Great Lakes region that is “climate ready.” Toward this end, these modules provide stakeholders and decision makers with clear information about Great Lakes climate, as well as what we need to adapt to, why, and how.

The Apia Office is working in an integrated fashion looking at both Climate Change Adaption and Mitigation from educational, social, scientific and cultural perspectives. Climate change and climate variability influence human health in a variety of ways, and it may be important for the public health sector to consider these threats. Understanding the current and future burden of climate-sensitive diseases may benefit planning and response activities. As part of the Climate-Ready States and Cities Initiative (CRSCI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) introduced the five-step iterative Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) Framework (Figure 1) designed to help the public health sector plan for and adapt to climate-related hazards.

Drought can have real consequences for ecosystems and human communities alike - from leading to increases in wildfire, insect outbreaks, local species extinctions, and forest diebacks, to altering rates of carbon, nutrient, and water cycling. In the future, droughts are generally expected to be hotter, longer-lasting, and larger than those of the past, potentially intensifying these impacts. Scientists from across the country are working to understand the many different impacts of drought, how they might change in the future, and how we can better predict and prepare for these events. The kit is designed for classroom teachers and informal educators in parks, refuges, forest lands, nature centers, zoos, aquariums, science centers, etc., and is aimed at the middle school grade level. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with six other federal agencies—National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA, NASA, U.S. Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management—developed the kit to aid educators in teaching how climate change is affecting the Nation’s wildlife and public lands, and how everyone can become climate stewards.
