Native Fire- Safe Use and Application of Prescribed Fire

"Native Fire" discusses Native American's historic use of fire and addresses how traditional practices in the southern plains states have influenced its modern-day application. In it, fire research specialists speak to this history and address some of the complex challenges facing landscapes today. The 13-minute video also explains why fire is an essential and timeless tool that is necessary for maintaining and restoring ecosystems that evolved with fire. When safely applied by professionals at the right time, in the right way, for the right reasons, these prescribed fires reduce vegetation buildup, help protect our communities and restores our fire-dependent ecosystems.

Native One Stop

NativeOneStop.gov was launched in an effort to provide American Indians and Alaska Natives with easy, online access to Federal resources and programs. NativeOneStop.gov is a partnership of many Federal agencies and organizations with a shared vision – to provide improved, personalized access to Federal resources and programs for American Indians and Alaska Natives. NativeOneStop.gov will make it easier for tribes, Alaska Natives, and American Indians to find services, receive consistent information, and streamline outreach and services by Federal agencies. The site's core function is the eligibility prescreening questionnaire or "Resources Finder." Answers to the questionnaire are used to evaluate a visitor's situation and compare it with the eligibility criteria for resources and programs. Each program description provides visitors with the next steps to apply for any resource or program of interest.

Safe Water Program Improvement e-Learning Series (SWPI)

SWPI helps health department programs strengthen services to people that use wells, cisterns, springs, and other private drinking water systems not covered by the Safe Drinking Water Act. Oversight for these systems vary, but core elements of successful, sustainable programs are similar. SWPI walks through the 10 Essential Environmental Public Health Services and the Environmental Public Health Performance Standards, and provides examples of using them to identify and fill program gaps in these types of drinking water programs.

Technical Documentation on Exposure-Response Functions for Climate-Sensitive Health Outcomes

Climate change and climate variability influence human health in a variety of ways, and it may be important for the public health sector to consider these threats. Understanding the current and future burden of climate-sensitive diseases may benefit planning and response activities. As part of the Climate-Ready States and Cities Initiative (CRSCI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) introduced the five-step iterative Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) Framework (Figure 1) designed to help the public health sector plan for and adapt to climate-related hazards.

The Effectiveness and Implementation of 4-Poster Deer Self-Treatment Devices for Tick-borne Disease Prevention

In the last decade, the reported incidence of tick-borne disease has increased significantly in the United States.1, 2 Climate change is projected to alter the geographic and seasonal distribution of existing vectors and risk of vector-borne diseases.3 Resilient public health preparedness efforts and climate adaptation plans could mitigate the anticipated change in tick-borne disease risk. Health departments and other local jurisdictions have a variety of options available to combat the spread of tick-borne illness. Assessing public health interventions, Step 3 of CDC’s Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework,4 is a necessary step before choosing an intervention strategy. This document seeks to provide guidance on one potential intervention activity, and provides a summary of peer-reviewed and grey literature to determine the effectiveness of the 4-Poster self-treatment bait station device for controlling tick populations among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) hosts. Procedures for implementation of the 4-Poster device, occupational health and safety guidelines, and other considerations relating to 4-Poster device usage that may impact effectiveness are discussed.

The Globe Program

GLOBE Observer is an international network of citizen scientists and scientists working together to learn more about our shared environment and changing climate. The GLOBE Observer Program currently accepts observations of Clouds and Mosquito Habitats, with planned expansion to other types of data in the future. The cloud observations help NASA scientists understand clouds from below (the ground) and above (from space). Clouds play an important role in transferring energy from the Sun to different parts of the Earth system. Since clouds can change rapidly, scientists need frequent observations from citizen scientists.

Tribal Climate Adaptation Guidebook

The Oregon Climate Change Research Institute, along with Adaptation International, created the Tribal Climate Adaptation Guidebook, which provides a framework for climate change adaptation planning in the context of existing tribal priorities. The Guidebook builds on the on-going climate-related work in tribal communities, directly considers the unique issues facing Indigenous communities, and identifies opportunities and guidance for incorporating Traditional Knowledges based on the Climate and Traditional Knowledges Workgroup’s Guidelines for Considering Traditional Knowledges (TKs) in Climate Change Initiatives. The Tribal Climate Adaptation Guidebook is designed to be useful for tribes at any stage of adaptation planning and with varying degrees of funding and staff capacity. The Guidebook is designed so that tribes can work through any applicable section and skip sections that are not applicable. The development of the guidebook was overseen by a group of advisors who supported the writing staff by refining the goals and objectives for the Guidebook and by providing regular reviews throughout the development process. The project was funded by a grant from the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative and received supplemental funding from the Pacific Northwest Climate Impacts Research Consortium and the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute.

UNESCO Apia Climate Change and Climate Change Adaptation

The Apia Office is working in an integrated fashion looking at both Climate Change Adaption and Mitigation from educational, social, scientific and cultural perspectives. Adaptation initiatives focus on integrating climate content and adaptation skills in school curriculum, community awareness and sharing of information through the media to build adaptive capacity in Pacific countries. Mitigation initiatives consider sustainable ways of developing alternative energy supplies. In line with the outcome from Rio+20, UNESCO will focus on supporting green growth and climate smart development in the Pacific.
