Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: February 10, 2023. The purpose of the AFG Program is to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and fire-related hazards. The program provides direct financial assistance to eligible fire departments, nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations, and State Fire Training Academies (SFTA). The funds provide critically needed resources that equip and train emergency personnel to recognized standards, enhance operational efficiencies, foster interoperability, and support community resilience.

Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

In awarding grants, the Administrator of FEMA is required to consider the following:

• The findings and recommendations of the Technical Evaluation Panel (TEP).
• The degree to which an award will reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage by reducing the risks associated with fire related and other hazards.
• The extent of an applicant’s need for an AFG grant and the need to protect the United States as a whole.
• The number of calls requesting or requiring a firefighting or emergency medical response received by an applicant.

Most recent deadline: January 13,2023. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has announced plans to provide funding for fish (and/or shellfish) hatchery maintenance initiatives, within the eligible jurisdictions focused on in the program. Federally-recognized Tribes may submit project proposals to the Fish Hatchery Maintenance Program contact at their Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Regional Office. Project proposals are scored according to published ranking criteria, with the highest-scoring projects receiving funding.

Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: October 31, 2022. NOAA Fisheries is accepting applications for the Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Competition. This funding will support the promotion, development and marketing of U.S. fisheries. Awards maximum is $300,000. Learn more and apply here.

Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: January 27, 2023. The Flood Mitigation Assistance Program is a competitive grant program that provides funding to states, local communities, federally recognized tribes and territories. Funds can be used for projects that reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings insured by the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA chooses recipients based on the applicant’s ranking of the project and the eligibility and cost-effectiveness of the project. FEMA requires state, local, tribal and territorial governments to develop and adopt hazard mitigation plans as a condition for receiving certain types of non-emergency disaster assistance, including funding for hazard mitigation assistance projects. Kendall is a regional foundation based in Boston that isn't quite what you'd call a climate funder, as its sole focus is sustainable food systems. But its focus on food is driven by goals of improving health, coupled with sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas produced in agriculture.

Deadline for 2018 unknown.This AFRI Challenge Area promotes and enhances the scientific discipline of food safety, with an overall aim of protecting consumers from microbial and chemical contaminants that may occur during all stages of the food chain, from production to consumption. This requires an understanding of the interdependencies of human, animal, and ecosystem health as it pertains to foodborne pathogens. The long-term outcome for this program is to support the development and deployment of science based knowledge to improve the safety and nutritional quality of food without sacrificing flavor, acceptability, and affordability. In order to achieve this outcome, this program will support multi-function Integrated Research, Education, and/or Extension Projects, and Food and Agricultural Science Enhancement (FASE) Grants that address the Program Area Priority, Effective Mitigation Strategies for Antimicrobial Resistance (see Food Safety RFA for details).

Deadline Passed for 2018. Deadline Unknown for 2019. The Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) offers grant funds with a 25% match to support the development and expansion of local and regional food business enterprises to increase domestic consumption of, and access to, locally and regionally produced agricultural products, and to develop new market opportunities for farm and ranch operations serving local markets. There are two types of project applications: planning grants and implementation grants. LFPP Planning Grants are used in the planning stages of establishing or expanding a local and regional food business enterprise. LFPP Implementation Grants are used to establish a new local and regional food business enterprise, or to improve or expand an existing local or regional food business enterprise.

Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: July 19, 2023. The Indigenous Animals Harvesting and Meat Processing Grant (IAG) Program will provide up to $50 million to improve tribal nations’ food and agricultural supply chain resiliency by developing and expanding value-added infrastructure related to meat from indigenous animals like bison, reindeer or salmon. The program will fund projects that focus on expanding local capacity for the harvesting, processing, manufacturing, storing, transporting, wholesaling or distribution of indigenous meats.

Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: February 17, 2022. Na’ah Illahee Fund works in relationship with Mother Earth to strengthen her living systems in acts of support, reciprocity, and respect. This Food Sovereignty Grant seeks to support our hunter, gather, grower way of life by funding Native organizations and individuals who preserve and practice these ways. NIF is looking to provide grants to Native people who are leading community-based food sovereignty and sustainability efforts in their communities. We will award financial support to projects, or organized activities led by Indigenous people that aim to revitalize or increase the practice of Indigenous lifeways and create access to traditional foods and medicines through community programming, workshops, and skill sharing. Na’ah Illahee Fund (NIF) provides resources for Native Communities across the Pacific Northwest who are located in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. As Native people, Na’ah Illahee sees the land as a living entity and tailors all of our community work and grantmaking to support this concept. We work in relationship with Mother Earth to strengthen her living systems in acts of support, reciprocity and respect. NIF places a high value on sharing old teachings of growing and harvesting our own foods and medicines. We encourage sharing of these teachings in new ways. NIF is looking to provide grants to community based food program efforts led by Native people. NIF also encourages the teachings and sustaining of hunting and fishing practices and those being passed on to the younger generations. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on Native Communities and has shed light on the structural inequities in access to basic needs such as food. As we move forward from COVID to post-pandemic, we strive to advance a “just recovery” by helping tribal communities, to not only meet the healthy food needs of the people, but to support their right to choose their own foods into the future. NIF seeks to preserve our gather, hunter, grower way of life by funding organizations who help preserve these cultural practices.

Deadline passed as of December 8, 2016. Deadline for 2017 unknown. The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is charged with implementing the Farm to School Program. In this funding cycle, USDA anticipates awarding approximately $6 million in grant funding to support efforts that improve access to local foods in schools. Beyond the $5 million in funding provided in the HHFKA, in fiscal year (FY) 2016 USDA anticipates the availability of an additional $1 million, subject to appropriation, in grant funding to support placement of volunteer service members (e.g. AmeriCorps, VISTA, local service corps programs, etc.) in schools throughout the country to build or maintain school gardens, incorporate nutrition education into the schools’ culture, and support school food service personnel in procuring or promoting local and regional products for the school meal program - See link for more.

Deadline passed as of September 11, 2017. Deadline for 2018 unknown. The purpose of the fiscal year (FY) 2017 WIC Special Project Grants is to help WIC State Agencies develop, implement, and evaluate new or innovative methods of service to meet the changing needs of WIC participants, with special attention to the improved delivery of program services and demonstrate national or regional significance.

Deadline: January 12, 2024. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service, State, Private & Tribal Forestry, is requesting applications for the Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program (Community Forest Program or CFP). CFP is a competitive grant program that provides financial assistance to Indian Tribes, local governments, and qualified conservation non-profit organizations to establish community forests through the fee simple acquisition of private forest land. The purpose of the program is to establish community forests by protecting forestland from conversion to non-forest uses and provide community benefits including public recreation, environmental and economic benefits, and forest-based educational programs. Public access is required for all projects. To apply, interested local government and nonprofit applicants must submit applications to the State Forester where the property is located. Tribal applicants must submit applications to equivalent Tribal government officials. Deadline for Track B & C: August 21, 2024. The Inflation Reduction Act Forest Landowner Support programming provides financial assistance grants for projects that support underserved and small-acreage forest landowner participation in emerging private markets for climate mitigation and forest resilience. The Inflation Reduction Act provides the Forest Service $450 million for Forest Landowner Support which will be made available through a series of funding opportunities.
