Healthy Places for Healthy People will provide selected communities with expert planning assistance that centers around a two-day community workshop. A team of experts will help community members develop an implementable action plan that will focus on health as an economic driver and catalyst for downtown and neighborhood revitalization.

The Healthy Forests Reserve Program (HFRP) helps landowners restore, enhance and protect forestland resources on private lands through easements and financial assistance. HRFP aids the recovery of endangered and threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, improves plant and animal biodiversity and enhances carbon sequestration.

HFRP applicants must provide proof of ownership, or an operator (tenant) must provide written concurrence from the landowner of tenancy for the period of the HFRP restoration agreement in order to be eligible. Land enrolled in HFRP easements must be privately owned or owned by Indian tribes and restore, enhance or measurably increase the recovery of threatened or endangered species, improve biological diversity or increase carbon storage.

Recent Deadline: 1/29/2021. FEMA's hazard mitigation assistance provides funding for eligible mitigation measures that reduce disaster losses. Mitigation planning breaks the cycle of disaster damage, reconstruction and repeated damage. Hazard mitigation includes long-term solutions that reduce the impact of disasters in the future. FEMA Hazard Mitigation Assistance has five grant programs. 

• Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). Assists in implementing long-term hazard mitigation planning and projects following a Presidential major disaster declaration.
• Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Program. Provides funds for planning and projects to reduce or eliminate risk of flood damage to buildings that are insured annually under the National Flood Insurance Program.
• Pre-Disaster Mitigation (PDM) Program. Provides funds annually for hazard mitigation planning and projects.
• HMGP Post Fire Grant. Assistance available to help communities implement hazard mitigation measures after wildfire disasters.
• Building Resilient Infastructure and Communities (BRIC). Support for states, local communities, tribes and territories as they undertake hazard mitigation projects, reducing the risks they face from disasters and natural hazards.

Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: May 19, 2023. Concept papers were due January 13, 2023. The Grid Innovation Program provides $5 billion for FY 22-26 to support projects that use innovative approaches to transmission, storage, and distribution infrastructure to enhance grid resilience and reliability. Projects selected under this program will include interregional transmission projects, investments that accelerate interconnection of clean energy generation, and utilization of distribution grid assets to provide backup power and reduce transmission requirements. Innovative approaches can range from use of advanced technologies to innovative partnerships to the deployment of projects identified by innovative planning processes.

Rolling Deadline through March 2024. Part of the Inflation Reduction Act, the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program provides funding for direct loans and grants to fund projects that improve energy or water efficiency, enhance indoor air quality or sustainability, implement the use of zero-emission electricity generation, low-emission building materials or processes, energy storage, or building electrification strategies, or address climate resilience, of eligible HUD-assisted multifamily properties. Eligible owners primarily include owners receiving HUD rental assistance under Multifamily Section 8 project-based rental assistance, Section 202 Supportive Housing for Low-Income Elderly, and Section 811 Supportive Housing for Low-Income Persons with Disabilities. There are three different paths/cohorts depending on the propertie stages of development.

Funding available for wetland and associated upland habitat restoration and enhancement projects for conservation of native Great Lakes fish and wildlife populations, particularly migratory birds. Particularly in the Great Lakes area, but not limited to.

Deadline Passed 03/29/2019. Deadline Unknown for 2020. The goal of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is to target the most significant environmental problems in the Great Lakes ecosystem by funding and implementing federal projects that address these problems. As part of this initiative, the two bird habitat joint ventures that are in the Great Lakes watershed, the Upper Mississippi / Great Lakes Joint Venture and the Atlantic Coast Joint Venture, will be working with the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration programs in the Midwest and Northeast Regions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to competitively fund state and other partner projects for long-term habitat protection, restoration, or enhancement, for conservation of native Great Lakes fish and wildlife populations, particularly migratory birds. Preference will be given to activities that help meet the habitat goals of the Upper Mississippi / Great Lakes Joint Venture Implementation Plan or the Lower Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Plain (BCR 13) Bird Conservation Region Plan, other relevant bird conservation plans, and State Wildlife Action Plans. 

The USFWS requests interested entities to submit restoration, research and regional project proposals for the restoration of the Great Lakes Basin fish and wildlife resources, as authorized by the GLFWRA. The purpose of the act is to provide assistance to States, Indian Tribes, and other interested entities to encourage cooperative conservation, restoration and management of the fish and wildlife resources and their habitats in the Great Lakes Basin.

GLISA is soliciting proposals from organizations that will engage networks of stakeholders in science-grounded processes to identify, assess, and/or resolve climate-related problems or management issues.

Rolling Deadline. The IEN/WMAN Mining Mini-Grants Program offers financial grant assistance to communities threatened or adversely affected by mining in the U.S. and Canada. We recognize that mining activity often has detrimental impacts to all aspects of community and cultural well-being and IEN/WMAN encourages projects that strive to protect the environment, ecosystems, cultural resources, and community health from mining impacts. Annie's offers Grants for Gardens donations to schools and other educational programs that help build school gardens. Since 2008, we've helped fund to more than 270 gardens.

Deadline Passed as of 2/23/2018. Deadline Unknown for 2019.The Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program (GCDAMP) was established for the long-term preservation and management of the cultural and natural resources of the Grand Canyon in accordance with the Grand Canyon Protection Act of 1992 (GCPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended (NHPA). Reclamation has determined that its operation of Glen Canyon Dam under the 2016 Record of Decision for the Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan is an undertaking (36 CFR 88.16y) that might result in changes to the character of downstream historic properties. To facilitate compliance, a Programmatic Agreement (PA) was entered into by Reclamation, the Western Region and Rocky Mountain Region of the National Park Service (NPS), the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the Arizona State Historic Preservation Officer, the Hopi Tribe, the Hualapai Tribe, the Navajo Nation, the Zuni Pueblo, and the Paiute Consortium. The GCDAMP, GCPA, NHPA, and PA all contain language mandating consultation with concerned Native American Tribes, for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of historic properties of significance to these Native American Tribes. The Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians’ participated in this process to identify, evaluate, monitor, and equally participate in the long-term management of all historic properties, sacred areas, and locations of traditional Paiute cultural use that are within the area affected by the operations of Glen Canyon Dam. The Tribe's participation in the GCDAMP is essential to ensuring that the tribal values are represented at the various program functions and to ensure effective government-to-government consultation on federal undertakings that may affect resources important to the Tribe. The Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative intends that awards under this announcement will support its mission and goals regarding how climate change and other stressors affect natural and cultural resources within the geographic range of the GBLCC.

Deadline Passed 03/20/2019. Deadline Unknown for 2020. There will be eight grant competitions from this notification valued at approximately $16,200,000 as follows: 1) High Impact Weather Testbeds, 2) Joint Technology Transfer Initiative (JTTI), 3) Air Quality Research and Forecasting, 4) Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment - Southeast U.S. (VORTEX-SE), 5) Infrasound Detection of Tornadoes and High Impact Weather, 6) Next Generation of Mesoscale Weather Observing Platforms, 7) Snowpack and Soil Moisture Observations and Data Assimilation to Improve the National Water Model (NWM), and 8) Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S).

These eight competitions are focused on improving NOAA's understanding and ultimately its weather and water forecasting services through engagement with the external scientific community on key science gaps of mutual interest through funded grant opportunities.One of the key themes is supporting applied research and development that leads to the demonstration in NOAA’s testbeds during the project period of new high impact weather, water, and air quality observing and forecasting applications, including new data or products, improved analysis techniques, better statistical or dynamic forecast models and techniques, and communication of that information to better inform the public.
