Our lab uses evolutionary ecology to understand how organisms and communities are shaped by disturbances such as floods, droughts, and dams. Much of our focus is on aquatic insects, but lab members also work on projects involving fish, frogs, and riparian plants. Current projects examine the evolution of flood and drought escape behaviors, population dynamics and biodiversity estimation in desert streams, management of dammed rivers using prescribed flow regimes, and computer vision methods for insect identification.

My interests focus in forest community ecology and extend into the application of ecology: silviculture. I have worked in both tropical and temperate forest systems. Current research is focused on ecological processes of riparian forests, ecology of post-fire forest dynamics, and management of red alder (Hardwood Silviculture Cooperative). I have had a finger into projects on scale-effects on plant diversity controls, food webs in riparian systems, and the autecology of Willamette Valley savanna tree species.

I have studied the effects of environmental forcing on the reproductive biology, foraging ecology, and population dynamics of marine birds and mammals. I use state of the art electronics to study foraging, migration, and dive patterns of seabirds and integrate these data with in-situ and remotely-sensed measures of prey resources or their proxies. I have applied results from many of these studies to address seabird-fishery interactions, identification of marine important bird areas, and other aspects of marine spatial planning.
