The Tribal Climate Change Funding Guide is intended to provide up-to-date information on grants, programs and plans that may assist tribes in addressing climate change through a broad range of sectors. The new National Ocean Policy calls for actions to improve understanding of and capacity to respond to ocean acidification, recognizing the potential adverse impacts of an acidifying sea upon marine ecosystems. The effects of ocean acidification could significantly affect strategies for developing practices towards the sustainability of ocean resources. Basic research concerning the nature, extent nd impact of ocean acidification on oceanic environments in the past, present and future is required. NSF Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability Fellowship NSF

Through the SEES Fellows Program, NSF seeks to advance science, engineering, and education to inform the societal actions needed for environmental and economic sustainability and human well-being while creating the necessary workforce to address these challenges. The Program's emphasis is to facilitate investigations that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and address issues of sustainability through a systems approach, building bridges between academic inquiry, economic growth, and societal needs. The Fellow's proposed investigation must be interdisciplinary and allow him/her to obtain research experiences beyond his/her current core disciplinary expertise.

NSF Water Sustainability and Climate Grant NSF

The National Science Foundation’s Water Sustainability and Climate program addresses one of the most urgent challenges the world is currently facing, that of water quantity and quality in the light of human needs, as well as climate variability. The overall goal of this program is to improve the understanding of interactions between the water system and land use changes. Topics of interest include 1) Frameworks or models that can be used to predict impacts of human development, climate change, land use on the water system; 2) Determining the potential inputs, outputs, and potential changes in water quality and quantity in response to human development, climate change, and land use; and 3) Determining how our built water systems and governance systems can be made more reliable, resilient, and sustainable to meet multiple needs.

Opportunity for Technical Assistance for Remote Alaska Communities Energy Efficiency Competition (Phase 1: Pledge Designation) Office of Indian Energy & the EERE

The Office of Indian Energy and EERE have issued a Notice of Technical Assistance (NOTA) to significantly accelerate efforts by remote Alaskan communities to adopt sustainable energy strategies. The Remote Alaskan Communities Energy Efficiency Competition will empower Alaskan communities and Alaska Native villages to develop effective tools to advance the use of reliable, affordable, and energy efficient solutions that are replicable throughout Alaska and other Arctic regions. (Phase 1) DOE is asking eligible applicants to sign a pledge to improve community energy efficiency by 15% or more by 2020. The Pacific Coast Salmon Recovery Fund (PCSRF) was established to address the need to protect, restore and conserve Pacific chinook, chum, coho, pink and sockeye salmon and steelhead, and their habitat. Paleo Perspectives on Climate Change Program NSF

The goal of research funded under the interdisciplinary P2C2 solicitation is to utilize key geological, chemical, and biological records of climate system variability to provide insights into the mechanisms and rate of change that characterized Earth’s past climate variability, the sensitivity of Earth’s climate system to changes in forcing, and the response of key components of the Earth system to these changes. Important scientific objectives of P2C2 are to: 1) provide comprehensive paleoclimate data sets that can serve as model test data sets analogous to instrumental observations; and 2) enable transformative syntheses of paleoclimate data and modeling outcomes to understand the response of the longer-term and higher magnitude variability of the climate system that is observed in the geological record.

Patagonia Environmental Grant Patagonia Environmental Grant

We are most interested in making grants to organizations that identify and work on the root causes of problems and that approach issues with a commitment to long-term change. Because we believe that the most direct path to real change is through building grassroots momentum, our funding focuses on organizations that create a strong base of citizen support. We support small, grassroots, activist organizations with provocative direct-action agendas, working on multi-pronged campaigns to preserve and protect our environment. We think the individual battles to protect a specific stand of forest, stretch of river or indigenous wild species are the most effective in raising more complicated issues—particularly those of biodiversity and ecosystem protection—in the public mind. Prediction of and Resilience against Extreme EVENTS (PREEVENTS) NSF

There is clear societal need to better understand and mitigate the risks posed to the US by natural hazards, consistent with the mandate of the National Science Foundation (NSF) “…to promote the progress of science [and] advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare....” NSF and the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) have long supported basic research in scientific and engineering disciplines necessary to understand natural hazards and extreme events, including through the Interdisciplinary Research in Hazards and Disasters (Hazards SEES) program and multiple core programs in the GEO Directorate. PREEVENTS is designed as a logical successor to Hazards SEES and is one element of the NSF-wide Risk and Resilience activity, which has the overarching goal of improving predictability and risk assessment, and increasing resilience, in order to reduce the impact of extreme events on our life, society, and economy. PREEVENTS will provide an additional mechanism to support research and related activities that will improve our understanding of the fundamental processes underlying natural hazards and extreme events in the geosciences. PREEVENTS is focused on natural hazards and extreme events, and not on technological or deliberately human-caused hazards. The PREEVENTS portfolio will include the potential for disciplinary and multidisciplinary research at all scales, particularly aimed at areas ripe for significant near- or medium-term advances. PREEVENTS seeks projects that will (1) enhance understanding of the fundamental processes underlying natural hazards and extreme events on various spatial and temporal scales, as well as the variability inherent in such hazards and events, and (2) improve our capability to model and forecast such hazards and events. Region 10 Indian Environmental General Assistance Program for FY 2018 EPA

Recent Deadline was 1/17/2017. Next Deadline Unknown. . EPA’s policy is to work with tribes on a government-to-government basis to enhance environmental protection in Tribal communities. In 1992, Congress passed the Indian Environmental General Assistance Program Act which authorizes EPA to provide General Assistance Program (GAP) grants to federally recognized tribes and tribal consortia for planning, developing, and establishing environmental protection programs. The GAP program is exempt from competition, therefore, applications that meet the stated requirements in program regulations and guidance will be funded if funds are available.

Regional Conservation Partnership Program USDA

Through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP), NRCS seeks to co-invest with partners in innovative, workable, and cost-effective approaches to benefit farming, ranching, and forest operations, local economies, and the communities and resources in a watershed or other geographic area. RCPP partners develop project applications, as described in this notice, to address specific natural resource objectives in a proposed area or region. Partnering organizations design, promote, implement, and evaluate the project outcomes. Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) Program NOAA

Remote Alaskan Communities Energy Efficiency Competition Request for Information USDOE

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing a new initiative to significantly accelerate adoption of sustainable clean and energy efficiency strategies in remote rural Alaskan communities. For the purposes of this initiative, “remote or rural areas” include communities with a population of 5,500 or less that are not connected by an all-weather road or rail to Anchorage or Fairbanks, or with a population of 1,500 or less that are connected by road or rail to Anchorage or Fairbanks. Request for Proposals from Indian Tribes and Intertribal Consortia for Nonpoint Source Management Grants Under Clean Water Act Section 319 EPA

The primary goal of a nonpoint source management program is to control nonpoint source pollution through management measures and practices. Projects should focus on watershed-based plans and on-the-ground projects that will result in significant steps towards solving NPS impairments. Fresh, coastal and estuarine projects are eligible for funding through this opportunity. Applicants should include in their proposal a description of how the project fits into the watershed context.
EPA has incorporated water quality projects for tribes in recognition that not all tribes have developed standards and may need additional time and/or technical assistance in order to develop estimates of the NPS pollutants.

Request for Proposals: Innovative Approaches to Ecological Drought Northwest Climate Science Center

Through this solicitation, the NW CSC is seeking innovative projects to help us assess which ecosystem components and ecological processes are most vulnerable to pronounced water deficiencies and to test or demonstrate new methods or technologies intended to lessen or adapt to the ecological impacts of drought. Study areas should be located in the region serviced by the NW CSC (Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and western Montana).
