Researchers from the USFS Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory have developed an early-warning system, called the Severe Fire Danger Index (SFDI), which could anticipate the conditions that promote large, high intensity fires with the goal of providing advanced notice to fire-prone communities and preventing wildland firefighter entrapments and fatalities.
