Student opportunity: U.S. Geological Survey Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center project: “Climate-related impacts and restoration opportunities for culturally significant Klamath River willow riparian species.” Deadline to Apply: May 10, 2024. We seek a motivated, collaborative graduate student researcher (master’s or Ph.D.) in the field of plant ecology, botany, environmental science, or related field to conduct a vegetation study of Klamath River sandbar willow that will be supported by USGS scientists and Karuk Tribe managers and cultural practitioners. Primary tasks will include: 1) Conduct vegetation surveys within study sites selected in consultation with the Karuk Tribe and located along 217 km of the Klamath River from Orleans to the Iron Gate Dam. Surveys will be designed with the Karuk Tribe to quantify the abundance, quality, and access to sandbar willow. 2) Analyze data to calculate statistical differences among sites (e.g., reference vs. burned vs. restored) and the hydrologic site characteristics associated with vegetation metrics. 3) Write a peer-review scientific publication detailing the results of the study. 4) Assist with development of a willow monitoring protocol and K-12 educational materials. UCAR's Next Generation Graduate Fellowship Program is accepting applications for the 2024 cohort. Deadline to Apply: May 31, 2024. The Next Generation Fellowship is a 2 year program for students currently enrolled in graduate studies related to Earth System Sciences at a North American university (USA, Mexico, Canada). This program provides the opportunity for Fellows to explore the interplay between scientific research, diversity and inclusion, and public policy within the field of Earth Systems Science. During their two year fellowship, Fellows pursue one of three tracks - Earth System Science; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; or Science Policy - collaborating with UCAR experts while participating in dedicated professional development and leadership training opportunities. Each Fellow receives a $40,000 award over two years ($10,000 twice per year); up to 20 weeks of paid research trips to Boulder, CO or Washington, D.C. or other agreed upon location; funding to attend conferences, professional coaching; and the support of a like minded cohort. U.S. Forest Service Tribal Climate Equity Fellowship with the USDA Northeast Climate Hub. Applications Due: June 7, 2024. The ORISE Fellow will engage in research and collaboration on climate equity specifically for tribes and tribal communities. The focus will be to integrate indigenous knowledge for application to climate adaptation and mitigation related to working lands (including agricultural lands, soil health, forest resources and carbon management). In particular, the fellow’s research and engagement with tribes will address concerns about the balance and trade-offs of managing tribal lands for multiple objectives such as forest and farm production, biodiversity, old growth management, and climate mitigation strategies. 2025 Faculty Fellowship Program: Now Accepting Proposals. Deadline: July 15, 2024. The NW CASC is now accepting proposals for our 2025 Faculty Fellowship Program. This last-mile program aims to support efforts to make existing research more usable for natural and cultural resource managers facing climate-related risks and challenges. To achieve this aim, the program supports research involving faculty at NW CASC Consortium institutions and provides skills-building opportunities around the co-production of decision-relevant (i.e., “actionable”) science. The NW CASC invites proposals from faculty and non-faculty scientists with primary investigator status at University of Washington, Boise State University, Northwest Indian College, Oregon State University, Portland State University, University of Montana, Washington State University and Western Washington University. University of Washington Center for Environmental Health Equity Seeks Tribal Outreach Manager. Open Until Filled. The UW Center for Environmental Health Equity (CEHE) is a newly established interdisciplinary center at the University of Washington in Seattle.
