Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. This investment assistance will help communtiies and regions devise and implement long-term economic recovery strategies through a variety of non-construction and construction projects, as appropriate, to address economic challenges in areas where a Presidential declaration of a major disaster was issued under the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Act as a result of Hurricane Florence, Michael, and Lane, Typhoons Yutu and Mangkhut, and of wildfires, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and other natural disasters occurring in calendar year 2018, and tornadoes and floods occuring in calendar year 2019.

Deadline Passed 03/20/2019. Deadline Unknown for 2020. There will be eight grant competitions from this notification valued at approximately $16,200,000 as follows: 1) High Impact Weather Testbeds, 2) Joint Technology Transfer Initiative (JTTI), 3) Air Quality Research and Forecasting, 4) Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment - Southeast U.S. (VORTEX-SE), 5) Infrasound Detection of Tornadoes and High Impact Weather, 6) Next Generation of Mesoscale Weather Observing Platforms, 7) Snowpack and Soil Moisture Observations and Data Assimilation to Improve the National Water Model (NWM), and 8) Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S).

These eight competitions are focused on improving NOAA's understanding and ultimately its weather and water forecasting services through engagement with the external scientific community on key science gaps of mutual interest through funded grant opportunities.One of the key themes is supporting applied research and development that leads to the demonstration in NOAA’s testbeds during the project period of new high impact weather, water, and air quality observing and forecasting applications, including new data or products, improved analysis techniques, better statistical or dynamic forecast models and techniques, and communication of that information to better inform the public. The Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative intends that awards under this announcement will support its mission and goals regarding how climate change and other stressors affect natural and cultural resources within the geographic range of the GBLCC.

Deadline Passed as of 2/23/2018. Deadline Unknown for 2019.The Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program (GCDAMP) was established for the long-term preservation and management of the cultural and natural resources of the Grand Canyon in accordance with the Grand Canyon Protection Act of 1992 (GCPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended (NHPA). Reclamation has determined that its operation of Glen Canyon Dam under the 2016 Record of Decision for the Glen Canyon Dam Long-Term Experimental and Management Plan is an undertaking (36 CFR 88.16y) that might result in changes to the character of downstream historic properties. To facilitate compliance, a Programmatic Agreement (PA) was entered into by Reclamation, the Western Region and Rocky Mountain Region of the National Park Service (NPS), the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the Arizona State Historic Preservation Officer, the Hopi Tribe, the Hualapai Tribe, the Navajo Nation, the Zuni Pueblo, and the Paiute Consortium. The GCDAMP, GCPA, NHPA, and PA all contain language mandating consultation with concerned Native American Tribes, for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of historic properties of significance to these Native American Tribes. The Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians’ participated in this process to identify, evaluate, monitor, and equally participate in the long-term management of all historic properties, sacred areas, and locations of traditional Paiute cultural use that are within the area affected by the operations of Glen Canyon Dam. The Tribe's participation in the GCDAMP is essential to ensuring that the tribal values are represented at the various program functions and to ensure effective government-to-government consultation on federal undertakings that may affect resources important to the Tribe. Rolling Deadline. The IEN/WMAN Mining Mini-Grants Program offers financial grant assistance to communities threatened or adversely affected by mining in the U.S. and Canada. We recognize that mining activity often has detrimental impacts to all aspects of community and cultural well-being and IEN/WMAN encourages projects that strive to protect the environment, ecosystems, cultural resources, and community health from mining impacts. GLISA is soliciting proposals from organizations that will engage networks of stakeholders in science-grounded processes to identify, assess, and/or resolve climate-related problems or management issues.

The USFWS requests interested entities to submit restoration, research and regional project proposals for the restoration of the Great Lakes Basin fish and wildlife resources, as authorized by the GLFWRA. The purpose of the act is to provide assistance to States, Indian Tribes, and other interested entities to encourage cooperative conservation, restoration and management of the fish and wildlife resources and their habitats in the Great Lakes Basin.

Deadline Passed 03/29/2019. Deadline Unknown for 2020. The goal of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is to target the most significant environmental problems in the Great Lakes ecosystem by funding and implementing federal projects that address these problems. As part of this initiative, the two bird habitat joint ventures that are in the Great Lakes watershed, the Upper Mississippi / Great Lakes Joint Venture and the Atlantic Coast Joint Venture, will be working with the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration programs in the Midwest and Northeast Regions of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to competitively fund state and other partner projects for long-term habitat protection, restoration, or enhancement, for conservation of native Great Lakes fish and wildlife populations, particularly migratory birds. Preference will be given to activities that help meet the habitat goals of the Upper Mississippi / Great Lakes Joint Venture Implementation Plan or the Lower Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Plain (BCR 13) Bird Conservation Region Plan, other relevant bird conservation plans, and State Wildlife Action Plans. 

Under FY14 appropriations to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service anticipates providing grants to support development and implementation of Great Lakes Tribal Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plans. Two-year grant awards will be used by tribes for activities that directly relate to the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes and Great Lakes Basin.

Deadline Unknown for 2019. The U.S. Forest Service will support projects in the Great Lakes basin that implement the following strategic, priority actions: restore tree canopy lost to infestation by emerald ash borer; create or improve green infrastructure through planting of trees and other vegetation; restore the function of coastal wetland areas through planting of native trees and diverse vegetation.

Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: July 24, 2023. Na'ah Illahee Fund seeks to fund the development of projects that aim to revitalize and strengthen Mother Earth and her living systems. They are looking to fund the capacity of groups who are doing the work and will implement Integrated and Green Infrastructure projects in their community. Projects must include at least one focus area: integrated water systems, projects that reduce and treat stormwater, implementation of clean and renewable energy, energy sovereignty, and more.

Deadline passed. Most recent deadline: May 19, 2023. Concept papers were due January 13, 2023. The Grid Innovation Program provides $5 billion for FY 22-26 to support projects that use innovative approaches to transmission, storage, and distribution infrastructure to enhance grid resilience and reliability. Projects selected under this program will include interregional transmission projects, investments that accelerate interconnection of clean energy generation, and utilization of distribution grid assets to provide backup power and reduce transmission requirements. Innovative approaches can range from use of advanced technologies to innovative partnerships to the deployment of projects identified by innovative planning processes.

Full proposal due: October 20, 2023. The Hawai‘i Sea Grant Pacific Islands Indigenous Science Competition is seeking projects that center Indigenous methodologies, protocols, and values in research. The goal of this competition is to promote Indigenous science in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Islands by funding projects that support resource stewardship, empower community, and strengthen cultural practices. Project teams must be led by a nonprofit organization in Hawaiʻi or the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands and include at least one land steward or cultural practitioner. Statement of Interests are due September 1, 2023 at 5:00 pm HST and Full Proposals are due October 20, 2023 at 5:00 pm HST. While recognizing the value of partnership across Western and Indigenous sciences, this funding opportunity seeks to shift the focus and center Indigenous methodologies, protocols, and values in research. With this intention in mind, Hawaiʻi Sea Grant will support between 2 and 4 projects, each in the $10,000 to $25,000 range, for a funding term of one year.
